1. How painful is a hair transplant procedure?

I know this might surprise many.

When you read about how the procedure is performed, it seems like something gut-wrenching – but the fact is, there's zero pain with the surgery, just a little discomfort.

Think of it like getting a filling done at the dentist. You will be given an anesthetic, so there won't be any pain, but you may still not like being at the dentist.

So if there's pain, how bad is the discomfort?

The discomfort comes from being in the chair for up to 10 hours for the entire process to be completed, though you will get regular breaks.

After the procedure, your hair transplant specialist will give you standard painkillers, just in case you experience mild pain.

2. Will everyone notice?

It's easy to notice that one has had a hair transplant because the surgical area will be red and a little obvious.

Of course, this depends on the amount of hair transplanted and the scalp which has been transplanted.

It also depends on the technique of hair transplant surgery you decide to have performed. The most popular hair transplant techniques used today is either Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) or Direct Hair Implantation (DHI).

But if you're not comfortable with anyone noticing, you can wear a hat for the first three weeks after the surgery.

3. Will the results be permanent?

After your hair follicles are transplanted into a bald area of your head, as time goes on, you will begin to notice some of your hair falling out in the first three months.

When this happens, do not be alarmed –it's normal.

Once the healing process is over, the transplanted hair follicles will begin to grow hair and fill out the bald patches on your scalp. The hair will continue to grow as you age naturally.

With that said, it's important to mention that there is a possibility that your first hair transplantation procedure might not be your last.

Surgeons will tell some patients that they need multiple "sessions" of transplant surgery to achieve their desired results. So this means that the permanency of the results varies from one patient to the other.

4. How long does it take for hair to grow after a hair transplant?

It will take between 8 and 10 months for new hair follicles to grow back strong and healthy in normal circumstances.

But some patients will shockingly see early and positive development, looking amazing by a half year post-operation.

It's safe to say that patients will begin to see proper full growth after 10 to 12 months.

The transplanted hair follicles can continue to grow after 12 months, and the hair growth will improve after 15 months.

Even if you don't begin to see results after 9 or 10 months. Don't freak out. You should have some patience. Your hair will grow over time. In the meantime, here's what you can do to speed up the hair growth process after a hair transplant:

  • It will help if you consume a balanced diet to get proper nutrition to get healthy and excellent hair quality.
  • Use medications prescribed by your doctors like minoxidil, Finasteride, multivitamins, and many more.
  • You can even apply oil on your scalp, and then the massage helps you get a good result.
  • You need to avoid your activities after your hair transplant at least for ten days. So the hair follicles can ultimately settle on your scalp.
  • It will help if you stop scratching your scalp should as this can be harmful to the transplanted area.

5. How long do I have to wait to go back to work after the procedure?

Most patients can return to work two days after the procedure.

But we always recommend patients engaged in work activities that may represent risk exposure to dust, sunlight, and head injuries, to take seven days off from work or wear a hat when at work.

Over to you...

Homework is critical. Your results, the amount you spend and how much better you feel after the hair transplant all depend on doing proper research well in advance. Never be pressured into having a hair transplant (or any other surgery) before you have completed your own research.
