What is a Hair Transplant?

Although it may sound self-explanatory, a hair transplant can simply be defined as a plastic surgery procedure that is used to treat hair loss. Hair follicles are moved from one area with adequate hair growth (known as a donor site) to an area that has lost hair.

Hair transplants are usually associated with head baldness, but the procedure can also combat baldness on the chest, and chin and it can restore eyelashes and eyebrows.

Depending on the technique – DHI or FUE – recommended by your surgeon, the hair transplant surgery usually takes between 4 and 12 hours.

Not everyone is an eligible candidate for this surgical procedure, one has to first have a donor area in any part of his/her body. People who usually form keloid scars after an incision may have some complications that may negatively affect the surgery results.

What is FUE?

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is a hair transplant method that is performed by collecting hair follicles in the donor region one by one without creating a linear incision. The harvested follicular unit grafts can be removed directly from the back and sides of the scalp using a small, round, 7 mm staple-like instrument.

You can consider this to be a minimally invasive method of removing and implanting hair follicles. Considering the fact that the surgeon has to harvest hair grafts one by one, the duration of the surgery is much longer than other methods. But it is an advanced hair transplantation method that offers maximum density, and in most hair transplant clinics, FUE is the most preferred method.

Over the years, FUE has been gaining popularity among different patients. The difference between the FUE and other hair transplant techniques is in the extraction process. Using the FUE method, your surgeon can extract 500 to 5000 grafts in one session.

Hair follicles are usually harvested from the back and sides of your head, but if the number of follicles that will be extracted is not sufficient, your surgeon can also extract the follicles from your beard or chest.

What is DHI?

DHI is an acronym for Direct Hair Implantation. Just like the FUE technique, DHI is one of the most recent techniques in hair transplantation. This technique also involves implanting hair follicles one after the other directly into the bald or thinning area of the head. When doing this, hair transplant specialists often use DHI-patented pen-like tools and the DHI implanter.

Depth, direction, and angle are controlled by the DHI implanter and the certified, trained specialists who use the tool. As implantation is done at the same time, DHI offers a solution for those who do not want the hair in the implantation area to be cut off completely. There is no need for shaving in the DHI hair transplant procedure, the donor area is trimmed.
