Hair Transplant for Women

Sep 9, 2019 10:57:59 AM

Hair transplant surgery is a procedure designed to combat baldness in both men and women. It involves moving hair from areas that have sufficient hair growth (referred to as donor sites) to an area that is bald. This surgery is not only confined to the head, but it can also be done to restore women’s eyelashes and eyebrows.

Hair loss in women is usually caused by hormonal changes after menopause, illness, or aging. Unlike men who lose hair in patches, women experience thinning all over the scalp.

In a bid to combat this hair loss problem, some women prefer wearing wigs, hairpieces, or any other styling tricks. Other women turn to topical prescription drugs. But for a long term solution, it’s wise to go for a hair transplant that will restore your lost hair.

With that said, this article will walk you through the hair transplant procedure for women. Here is what you don't want to miss:

Hair Transplant Procedure for Women

The hair transplant surgery is a good option for combating hair loss in 90% of bald men, but when it comes to women, it’s usually not the case.

This doesn’t mean that women do not lose hair, or they can’t have a hair transplant. But the way women lose hair differs from how men experience it. Women, but not all, experience diffuse hair loss in areas that usually have sufficient hair growth in men.

In females, the area that should have sufficient hair growth — usually refer as donor area — is affected by follicle-killing DHT. This makes the whole transplant process complicated in women than it is in men. If surgeons attempt to do a hair transplant procedure on women with diffuse hair loss, these hair follicles are going to fall off, meaning, the transplant won’t be successful.

Another common baldness difference between men and women is that which pertains to the frontal hairline. Females with hair loss tend to keep their frontal hairline and lose more hair at the top and back of their head. This is opposite to hair loss in men.

How is it Performed?

Performed by a dermatological surgeon, the hair transplant surgery usually takes between 4 and 12 hours. But before it commences, the patient will be examined, and some tests will be done to see if she has HIV or Hepatitis C in her system. The tests are done in order to protect the medical staff involved in the surgery.

What follows after the surgery is a discussion between the patient and the surgeon. The main point of discussion is the patient’s expectations as well as the overall procedure — this discussion is as important as the procedure itself because it makes sure that both the surgeon and the patient are on the same page.

Once the discussion is over, the surgeon will do some drawings which are aligned to the patient’s face. Each and everyone has a different face shape, so the surgeon does the drawings with extra care.

The patient is then given local anesthesia to make the scalp numb so that there won’t be any pain felt. Soon after the anesthesia kicks in, the surgeon will begin the process of harvesting hair follicles from an area with sufficient hair growth or the donor site. As the surgeon goes on with the harvest, the patient won’t feel anything not even slight pain.

What follows next is the opening of the recipient area —a bald area that will receive the grafts. By opening the recipient area, the surgeon will be making tiny incisions, and the harvested hair follicles are then planted upright.

Once the transplantation has taken place, the treated area will be carefully bandaged so as to avoid infection or any potential bleeding.
